Note that the Arudha lagna is the same as the ascendant (lagna) if the lord of the lagna is in the 1st of 7th sign from the lagna. People with their lagnesh in the 1st or 7th sign from the lagna are easier to analyze because what they are and what the world thinks about them is the same.

First of all 'Arudha' is a Sanskrit word which mean 'Half'. Before going further to its importance and meaning, let's us know how to calculate Arudha Lagna in our birth chart.
Here are the steps to calculate Arudha Lagna:
- Look at what house your ascendant lord (Lagna Lord) is placed and count the number of houses apart it is situated from your first house(Lagna). Counting is to be done along the placement of the zodiac signs in their correct order.
- Now go the same number of places forward from the house where your Lagna lord is placed and that is your Arudh Lagna. (This is the information that I got from Kapiel Raaj of KRSchannel).
Arudha Lagna Interpretation
Example: Let's suppose your Ascendant sign is Libra. So Libra becomes the 1st house. Now if Venus(Ascendant lord) is situated in Sagittarius i.e. 3rd house.Arudha Lagna in Libra Ascendant |
So Venus is 3 houses apart from your Ascendant sign. Now putting your finger at Sagittarius and counting 1, take two steps further, you will reach at Aquarius in the third count. So Aquarius becomes your Arudha Lagna. And Saturn is your Arudha Lagna Lord.
Exceptions: I read two other articles on internet and according to them Rishi Parashar gave exception to the above rules. Here is this:
If your Lagna Lord is situated at 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses of your birth chart, then you will deduct 4 houses from the final count. Means you have to less for counts in the second step above mentioned.
Example: Let's say your Ascendant lord of Libra Sign is placed in the seventh house of Aries. You will not count 7 houses further from Aries but, you will count only 7-4 = 3 houses further. So, Aries, Taurus and Gemini (9th house) becomes your Arudha Lagna.
What does Arudha Lagna Signify? Well, Arudha Lagna is not your true personality but this is the personality which people think of you. This is how you appear in the Maya world, in materialistic world of money and power.

DID YOU KNOW HOW WE BEHAVE FROM THE ĀRŪḌHA ?
VISTI LARSEN
It is taught that when malefics are placed in the 3rd or 6th from the Ārūḍha Lagna the person benefits, but in doing so they are also causing shock (Rāhu), sorrow (Saturn), dejection (Ketu) or anger (Mars) to others. Any malefic here will accept bribes if the person works in an official capacity! Only the Sun is righteous in these houses but still will humiliate and suppress your foes.
From this principle, we learn that when we benefit from a malefic we are potentially bringing about bad karma. We can thus expand that malefics in 3rd, 6th, 9th or 11th from the Ārūḍḥa Lagna can make us cause bad karma! Herein, malefics in the 9th are peculiar in that we are being encouraged by OTHERS to perform the actions, thinking that it is good for us.
Now, imagine that two or more malefics are aspecting another planet by Graha dṛṣṭi; this is considered a curse in the chart, implying some sorrow to be experienced in this life due to wrong actions in the last life! But if those malefics are ALSO in the 3rd, 6th, 9th or 11th from the Ārūḍḥa Lagna, your receipt of wealth/fortune by those negative means will also instigate the past curse in your life!
An example of this was taught to me many years ago. A lady had Venus afflicted, with Venus and one of the malefics causing its affliction placed in the 9th from her Ārūḍha Lagna. This is a curse of spouse (Venus) from the last life, and with the malefics, in the 9th from Ārūḍha Lagna, this would come about due to the encouragement of elders or well-wishers.
It so happened that she had a boyfriend and was being encouraged to break-up with him in favour of marrying a richer and more suitable groom, according to her parents. However, upon the groom learning of her past relationship, he called off the marriage leaving the lady with neither boyfriend nor spouse! Her reputation affected in the community, she found it difficult to move forward in her intimate life, and her faith in her family also diminished.
